Had a great time reading all of the comments. I've recently purchased my dream-bike. 82 Kat 1000-all original-with 2500 miles...I'd love to hear from any and all vintage Kat owners-especially those in the U.S. I would like to modify the bike (slightly) and am mechanically illiterate.

Hi,I've only owned my bike for a couple of years (after being a sad non biker for 15+ years). My machine seems to be a bit of a rare beast so i'm told, its not officially a Katana as no UK bike has been since mid 1980's. But its also not a straight forward GSX750F as it has had the Slingshot mods i.e carburation and shoter stroke engine from new, these mods were supposed to improve performance and were therefore a bit odd on a detuned (from GSXR) engine. Does anyone know of any others i've not seen any and neither have local dealers.

Hello Kat owners. And yes, even in Holland there are people that own a Katana. I bought mine recently to get the "racingblood" pumping again after a 10 yr cooling down period. It's , apart from the exhaust, original and from '81 so one of the first to arrive. And in very good condition. (Wanna buy it ?? lol) Although I'm not a member (yet), there is a dutch Katana Owners Club at: www.katanaclub.nl Hope to see you all on the road... we might even meet and greet!

We just finished our Katana-homepage... There are also a lots of informations about the pop-up-headlight Katana (S3)(my cycle) on it - also in English. I thought there had to be more informations about online :-)
http://www.katana-berlin.de
People which searched for informations for the S3 ended lately anyway at my e-mail adress. Maybe you like to set a link to us?
We would like to set a link to yours too.
We would like to read from you...

G'day,
Stumbled accross your site & am quite impressed with the quality & efforts gone into some of these featured bikes. My bike I've tried to keep stock standard. Apart from a 4 into 1, everything is completely original. She's only done 30,000 kms in the 21 years I've owned her. If you would like to see a couple of JPEG's, let me know. I'm only new to computers & the internet & I took her for a tour around the state last summer borrowing a mates' digital camera.
Cheers, Rodney.

Just recently picked up a Kat.  Nice bike, heard a story that only 200 were made in Canada for the 10th anniv.  I have a #199 on the bike.  Love the pop up light.  I love Suzuki's, my last one was a restored 1981 1/2 GS650 G, original.  Too bad I dropped the gears coming back from Calgary, very rare bike and all.

Keep the Shiny side up, any other 1984 Kat owners drop mail a line.

Nice site... thought I'd pop an advert here if that is ok as I couldn't find any sort of classified section for UK... we have just replaced a Katana engine block and looking to sell the old one.... was in running order but 2 piston rings worn (re compression test) and it was therefore using  alot of oil.. we also took the gear lever rod off this to put on new one as it was missing... basically a very good original engine.. if you require more details contact me by email and I'll get him indoors to explain the technical stuff!

Looking for Ł150 for it.

Tony (see below) there are several Kats in the Readers' section that hail from the US - I'll give you the names and you can check them out on the website, go to the bottom of the main Feature Bikes page:
Christian Denchasy
Anthony Consorte
Micke Malmros
Amos Adams
Lavelle Evans
Steve Lam
To contact them just click on their names and a new email should be created.  New Jersey may be thin on the ground with Kats but you are certainly far from alone in the States.

Love your Katana, your vision of the bike is inspirational !!!
I have recently moved from South Africa to New Jersey.  Some people would bring a suitcase, I brought my Katana & small back pack (weather permitting).  Sad realisation though, no early Katanas "ANY WHERE", none !!!  Was very glad to see Christian Denchasy's bikes & his enthusiasm/s for this beautiful machine.  Could you perhaps put me in touch with him, it seems thus far, that he is the only other "American" with an acquired  taste for that which is "decidedly different".

I need some pointers on how to do things this side of the pond !!!

Thank you, sincerely:  Tony

I am told that this was one of the limited (75) wire wheel versions that sold only in NZ and South Africa. It has a bigger bore than normal (1100cc+) and came with oil cooler and braided hoses as standard. Stock out put was approx 125 bhp. I got it second hand here five years ago to replace my UK 1100 Katana sz (bought from new)  which I had to leave behind when I moved here.

My dad used to race a katana 1100, but it has a racing engine which the valves don't close! He raced it in the North West and other road races in Northern Ireland. its a brilliant bike but I think they should be worth more now than what they are!

Oh well - The rebuild has stalled due to the excellent early spring weather ( Its difficult to stay focussed while the sun is shining and a 916 and Hayabusa lurk in the Garage)
Bike is loosely assembled and now wearing Revalved and sprung 1200 Bandit forks, Brand new Tokico 6 pots, New Hoses, Brand new VTR SP1 ( RC51) Master cylinders, New 1200 bandit loom and CDI - just need to bang the 1200 Bandit engine in and set everything else up

I suppose I need a catalyst to get me going !!!!

And the earlier idea of a Katana Specials ( Standard would be cool also) meet up in the UK seems very very appealing

perhaps with some publicity via Streetfighters,SOC,All the web boards we could get quite a few bikes together and scare the pants off some plastic bikes :-)

Anyone who's interested - get in touch

Maybe it could be done at some event ( Bulldog bash , Rock'n'blues etc) or at a regular Bikers Meet ( Bassets pole etc ) sometime in the summer
I don't mind doing a bit of organising and would even put up anyone who had to travel

So what do you think ???????

Anyone who is interested get in touch - Go on you know you want to !!!!

What a great web site. found some helpful ideas and information.  I am looking for the specs for the difference between a Kat 1100 engine and a standard GSX1100.  I know the Kat had lighter valves, changes to its cam timing and ignition, but what??  I need figures. My bike needs a heart transplant.
Cheers Wayne

Nice machine you have there, it is definitely a first class Kat worthy of the magazines.  I chose the second class method since I do have 5 of them.  What most Kat owner's don't know is that the GSXR provides us Kat owner's with a plethora of combinations that are bolt on i.e.-wheels, triple tree's, forks, disc's, caliper's, 530 conversion, etc...  The other thing that most Kat owner's don't know is that all of these parts are dirt cheap a la EBAY.  I have managed to collect quite a stock pile of GSXR parts in just one year at unbelievable prices, and if you Kat owner's out there are wondering who has all the 88 GSXR1100 wheels, why that would be me of course......I have managed to build my chassis kits for $1000 each complete - 88 GSXR1100 wheels and sprocket carrier-$300 / Metzeler MEZ4's - $250 EK 530 gold chain - $150 / Sprockets 15t and 45t - $75/87 GSXR750 41mm forks, tripletree, clipons, calipers, braided lines and all 3 rotors $225.
I might add that the performance increase on my chassis is unbelievable.  I also failed to mention that I obtained a set of Ohlins gold piggy backs brand new for $300 and the forks had been built by Racetech by the previous owner.  The bike is now using 18in radials 160/60-r  110/80-f, 300m fixed discs, 4 pot calipers 41mm race tech forks ,Ohlins rear shocks, and 530 chain and the best part about it is that it did not cost an arm and a leg and I achieved what I set out to do and that was to make a solid handling Kat that looks good and goes fast comfortably on a budget of $1000.  I am just completing #4 Kat and will be starting #5 soon.

I could not afford one in 1981, so I waited until 1997. I found a near mint, near Original bike with 16,000 miles on it and I love it.

Hey ever since I was a little girl I have always been around motorcycles. My brother recently owned and wrecked a 95 Katana 1100. They said it was totaled but my brother bought the parts and fixed it back up. Because of the accident he sold it. So I decided to bring one back to the family so I bought a 98 Katana 1100. For a 17 year old girl the boys tell me I can ride. So keep it real.

Great bike and great site.  My wife hates all the ideas that you are putting into my head.  Time to go looking for a better paying job so that I can really start work on the Kat.  One day I will send in photo's (when it is good enough).  Once again great site and keep up the good work.

I have bought (new) and owned an 1100 Katana since 1983.  I have also spoken to many owners over the years, some of whom have sold their bikes, only to find that they cannot replace them later when the itch starts again.  I hope you do keep your's and get as much enjoyment out of it as mine has given me.

This has got to be the coolest bike I have ever seen.

I recently bought a Katana 1100 and now I am getting ideas and checking the history of the bike.  In South Africa the parts are very hard to come by.

Again, Cool bike! :)
